Arriving into Barbados I'm already feeling inexplicably excited. I'm seated in 1A so I am first off of the plane and then luck is in my corner as the first bag onto the carousel belongs to…YES, me. Hoorah! Having slept through the jetBlue inflight snacks, I rushed to what I knew and loved and dined at the local hot spot Cafe Sol where they serve traditional Mexican dishes with an added Caribbean flare. Jerked BBQ wings, chicken salad and margaritas... YUM.
The first client we visited was Seabreeze Beach House, an all-inclusive paradise located directly on one of the most stunning beaches the South Coast has to offer and only minutes away from 'The Gap' a restaurant and nightlife haven. Our luxury two-bedroom oceanfront suite offered spacious, comfortable accommodation and was decorated in calming, neutral tones with splashes of that classic and vibrant Seabreeze blue. This hotel is fresh off a multi-million dollar renovation & expansion, offering 122 rooms, 3 outdoor pools, adult-only section & their very own Rum Shop right on the resort grounds. Guests can enjoy daily mixology classes, rum tasting & more.
With some free time before dinner (can you tell food takes up the majority of my thoughts?), we decided to have a little treat and popped open a bottle of perfectly chilled Moët bought duty free. We were invited out that evening by the Seabreeze team who took us to an 'off the beaten path’ ‘best kept secret’, sort of 'pop-up' restaurant with a rum shop feel in a local Barbadian home - Chicken Ritas! We ordered 8 pieces of chicken and 3 orders of fries for 6 people, and while it was all fried, WOW, it was delicately crispy and fresh. This was not the island KFC I expected as you could see the kitchen staff peeling the potatoes to make the real hand cut fries. On the wilder side, we also tried fried livers…a sort of crunchy pâté, delicious!
The next morning we hit the road heading north. Arriving at Port Ferdinand is almost what I envision heaven to be like, the villas are the epitome of luxury and offer some of the most stunning views in very tranquil surroundings. We were lucky enough to be staying in a 3 bedroom suite with the marina only steps away. The Quarterdeck restaurant is their poolside casual dining option serving sirloin burgers cooked to perfection and thin crust pizzas topped with the freshest ingredients. Port Ferdinand is a unique 5* property offering all spacious villa-style accommodations complete with resort amenities giving guests the best of both worlds. Private in-villa staff can be arranged for the ultimate indulgence or the staff can fully stock the kitchen prior to your arrival, allowing you to feel right at home. Port Ferdinand is also home to NIKKI Beach Club which offers exclusive complimentary day beds Mon-Fri to all guests staying at Port Ferdinand & Saint Peter’s Bay.
We had the opportunity to try out the new power boat, Searenity, from our luxury boat client Seaduced. This new 37ft boat is built for experience, style and comfort, to share those intimate moments with friends or pull up in style to one of the island’s beach front restaurants. We enjoyed organic rosé wine and home made rum punch on board, the perfect accompaniment to smooth sailing. The boat also offers options like grilling fresh catch, wake boarding or simply snorkeling with the turtles.
We ended our tour at the Nikki beach berth, where the beach club was already in full swing with a fashion show, and resident DJ Jérome Barthélémy in position in his pulpit overlooking the pool. Rosé and champagne were in abundance! We opted for a seafood affair, starting with tuna poké, sushi and then onto shrimp tempura tacos - each dish even more divine than the last. In true DOD spirit, we complemented that with 2 bottles of Lauren-Perrier Rosé. Extremely well fed and watered, we joined the spirit of the place with a dance, took some stunningly breathtaking sunset photos and before we knew it, it was time to head back to our suite to get ready for dinner!
The fine dining option at Port Ferdinand is The Dockside at 13º/59º, the latest addition to Chef Larry Rogers’ list of restaurant credits. It offers a new, stylish modern bistro concept that embodies the quintessential essence of bistronomy. Its organic uber-modern chic blends seamlessly with the relaxed edge of water feel, while still retaining an elusive air of cosmopolitan sophistication. I was wowed from beginning to end, the breadsticks alone sent me to heaven. On our table, the choices ranged from fresh oysters to ‘sweetbreads’ to some of the best burrata I’ve tasted and that was only the starters. My neighbor at dinner declared the catch of the day steamed in a bouillabaisse sauce and served with the local breadfruit the best dish she’d ever tasted and I can vouch that my short rib was absolutely divine.
Barbados is an island filled with some of the most luxurious hotels, suites and villas complemented by renowned chefs who elevate dining to an experience. With this being said, the island would not be the lifestyle paradise without it's wonderfully warm, proud and welcoming people.
